Porsche's PSM (Porsche Stability Management) works on the viscous coupled Carrera 4 (similar system to the 5M Legacy, no electronic clutches here).Īll other discussions which point to the AWD system as the limiting factor are merely heresay, with no evidence backing it up (actually quite the opposite).

There is no technical reason they couldn't do it on a manual transmissioned Legacy. Subaru has decided to exclude VDC from Legacys purely because of cost (or exclusivity, to justify the extra scratch for the top of the line models). This is used in everything from Malibu/G6 (ABS & TCS only) to the XLR and C6 Corvette (ABS, TCS, Stability Control) and there is little difference in the controller hardware between the two models. When a discrepancy exists, the computer applies light (usually no more than 10% since the ABS motor has limited pressure ability) braking to a wheel for a very brief period of time (on the order of milliseconds).įor reference, I work in a group who developed the DBC7.2 brake controller for GM. From there, the ECU looks at desired "perfect" vehicle behavior (from steering angle sensor) and compares it to actual behavior (from yaw sensor).

In addition to software changes, all that's necessary is a yaw rate sensor and steering angle sensor as additional inputs to the ABS computer.

Instead of modulating driver applied pressure, Stability Control systems use the ABS pump and accumulator to apply a small (very key here) amount of brake pressure to a single (or few) wheels to counteract undesired cornering forces (inside rear or outside front depending on the type of correction needed). Stability control systems are a part of the ABS (and by proxy, Traction Control) system. Viscous couplings would have no insurmountable effect on a stability control system.

Your best bet would be to wait and upgrade to one with it later.Īs much as people on this message board would like to think that VDC can't be offered on Legacy 5M, there is nothing mechanically stopping it. The competition has it and the general customer base is asking for it. I think it will be only a matter of time before Subaru starts offering VDC (or something similar) to all their vehicles. I'm not even sure if the control mechanism for varying torque in VTD is the same between a VDC and non-VDC system. Next, someone (I doubt Subaru would do it regardless of your willingness to pay) would need to remove your rear LSD and then add all the electronics that enable VDC. First, you need to have 5EAT to even entertain the idea. It's only offered in automatic (solves the VTD-dependency) and it's priced as a "premium" vehicle (solves the cost issue).Īs to retrofiitting VDC in your Legacy GT - I think it would be a very expensive proposition. VDC requires more electronics and sensors so it's more expensive than a regular VTD AWD system.įYI, Subaru has offered VDC standard with their new B9X Tribeca SUV. The other side of the equation is probably cost. Subaru could get away with offering an auto-tranny only Outback model, but imagine how one would position that with a model like the GT. To use VDC, the vehicle requires VTD AWD so that immediately cancels out all manual transmission vehicles using Continous (viscous coupling) AWD. Why Subaru didn't add VDC to other models - cost and technical issues. I have had no problems this winter in my LGT as soon as I learned to keep it out of the boost in first and second in the snow.:) But its so damn fun! The LGT is easy for me to overdrive it in bad weather, I have found myself going a weee bit faster than I thought I was more than once. My mom drives a SLK Mercedes year round an with Electronic Stability Control (ESP) and it is a more confident drive through the snow than my Legacy. I agree that it is a much safer and better driving experience. I would guess that VDC is included in the Outback LTD because it is considered a SUV, has a higher center of gravity and an increased probability of a rollover, etc.

come with VDC?Ĭurious to know if Subaru can install it on a Legacy.how much would it cost? And what are the potential problems. Why didn't the Legacy or any other vehicle besides the Outback Ltd. My prior car was the Audi A4 3.0 and had a very similiar system and felt that it made the driving experience better and safer. I currently have a '05 Legacy GT Lmtd and wish my car came equipped with VDC like the '05 Outback Ltd. I'm not sure if anyone can answer this question for me but I am curious is it possible for Subaru to add the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) to a vehicle that doesn't have it.
